February 15 2015 shore line clean up left bank of La Baye de Montreux 14h30 - 15h30

Lake and Weather Conditions: Lake calm and clear, water level normal, shoreline exposed left side of river mouth. Weather clear and sunny 8° C, precipitation 0, ave. wind speed 3.7 km/h.

Measured a 2 x 2 meter section of an alluvial fan depression on left bank of stream. Predominately composed of cig butts (92), *polystyrene foam pieces (32) and various small plastics. Greatest concentration of debris 10cm and less. Material appears to have been deposited by stream after last rain event, based on deposit location and deterioration of debris. Approx. 10 litres of litter collected throughout shore line along left bank of river mouth. Identifiable waste collected included: syringe, headphones, bike reflector, pieces of furniture and plastic bags.

*Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic made from a styrene monomer, known commonly by the trade name Styrofoam. Polystyrene foam is often dumped into the environment as litter and is notorious for breaking up into pieces that choke animals and clog their digestive systems. Cities and counties have begun to ban polystyrene foam (i.e. Taiwan, Portland, OR. USA and Orange County, CA. USA). http://www.earthresource.org/campaigns/capp/capp-styrofoam.html
